Search Engine

Search engines are like the library catalogue search system of the internet. The most well-known search engines include Google® and Yahoo®.

Key Words

Key words are those words or phrases that organisations feel their target market is searching when they look online. For example 'purchase Nike shoes online'.

Meta Tags

Meta tag elements provide information about a web page, often to help search engines categorise them correctly. These differ from key words as they are inserted into the code of a site and are often not visible.

HTML/XHTML

HTML (Hyper Text Mark up Language) is the basic code that defines how content appears on most websites. HTML is writtem in the form of elements consisting of tags. It is the building blocks of all basic websites.

Pay Per Click

Pay per click is an advertising technique developed by search engines to generate revenue from sites that wish to gain prominence with certain key words. When a user clicks on a link (typically a sponsored or highlighted link) the owner of the link is charged a small fee per click.

Black Hat/White Hat

In the world of the web there is a term given to those who use technology legally (white hat) and those who choose to get around technology and use it fraudulently for their own gain (black hat).
