Brand Abuse

Your Brand is Your Value

On the Internet, brand is all a company can rely on. People are not experiencing the business in any other way, so when fraudsters take an existing company's brand and use it for their own gain this has an effect on brand integrity.

Brand fraudsters cast a wide net. According to Net Security (www.net-security.org) online brand fraud continues to rise in all industry segments. In the clothing and footwear industry the growth in luxury and apparel brands grew 14% in the past year, and is growing consistently at this rate. Brand abuse involving an e-commerce component increased by 39%.

Examples of Online Brand Abuse

Online brand fraud includes:

  • Unauthorised use of logos and images
  • Use of hidden and visible text
  • Unauthorised use of a company's name or product in meta tags
  • Software, music and video piracy
  • Unauthorised distribution or sale of consumer goods, such as counterfeit goods
  • Use of a company's name on a competitor's site
